I still remember the joy of that last bell ringing at school—freedom! Growing up, I spent five years in university (yes, I did the victory lap—go big or go home, right?), and every summer break felt like a golden ticket. My summer jobs were always as adventurous as they were educational (and a paycheck I desperately needed). From working on golf courses in the mountains, bars in the city, to running experiential marketing campaigns for Trophy Foods, I got to meet and work with amazing people, learn valuable skills, and—most importantly—snack like a champ. I worked hard to help pay my tuition but always made time to explore whatever town I was in. After all, life’s too short to spend every moment in study mode.
And if university was one kind of education, well… prison was another. That chapter of my life taught me more than any textbook ever could. So when I was released, you can bet I was really excited for school to be out for summer. Going home to my friends and family after everything felt like the ultimate recess. Freedom never tasted so sweet.
Summer of 2015 was not a typical summer. I had just been arrested and so let’s just say I was not in vacation mode. Instead it was a mix of healing, rediscovery, and fishing (yes, actual fishing). Since I was on conditions that mandated I be with my mom at all times, we went to the family cabin where I used to spend summers as a child growing up. My grandpa still went up there as well so spending time with him fishing helped me forget that there was a massive black cloud hanging over our family because of me. I also got to do some deeper work—repairing relationships, reflecting on my journey, and casting out some emotional anchors that had been weighing me down.
Every chapter ends, a new one begins, and life is too short to wish your life away.
